One question I get asked constantly by clients and that I see a lot on social media are people asking for short cuts to better health. If you aren’t sure what I am talking about here are some example questions:
- What supplements can I used to cure my PCOS?
- What can I taken to get rid of my endometriosis?
- What can i take to ovulate?
- What’s the best diet to lose weight?
- What supplements do you use for fertility?
- What supplements do you use for more energy throughout the day?
- Will doing this cleanse help me with weight loss/period pain/hair loss/acne/eczema etc?
If you have seen these kind of questions on social media, you will see lots of impromptu health and medical advice, some of which may be useful and some of which is down right scary, especially if you are a practitioner reading it.
Now, I would like to make it clear that I use herbs, supplements and essential oils from time to time and I have been on every diet under the sun. But since my nutrition training and research a few years ago, and experimentation on myself, I can tell you that I have come to a very clear conclusion: there are no shortcuts.
Our hormones when they are awry, are a sign or signal that something is wrong. Our body is trying to tell us and we just need to learn to understand what it is telling us. Sometimes, we can cover up these symptoms for a few months with supplements, herbs and sometimes even medications too. But the initial problem isn’t going away, and in some cases, it could be getting worse.
However, supplements can be a great kick start to changing things, whilst you are changing your lifestyle and nutritional habits. You just can’t out supplement a bad diet or ongoing stress or a complete lack of movement (assuming you are fit and well enough to get up and move around and exercise).
You can take all the supplements in the world that you have been told will fix your issues, but, if you are stressed out from work, eating whatever you can grab on the run, getting home and collapsing only to order in whatever you can, only to rinse and repeat every day, you are not likely to see any meaningful improvements after your health.
So not only could you be stuck with expensive supplements, which may or may not work for you, if they do, you have to keep taking them to get the desired effect.
What Can You Do?
I’m going to say straight out, if you are on a medication to manage an hormonal issue, I am not telling you to come off it now. If you want to look at other ways of managing your issue, then yes, find yourself a skilled practitioner who can guide you through the process in conjunction with your doctor. But you must never come off a medication without checking with your doctor first.
But there are so many ways of managing hormonal or women’s health issues that require changes in lifestyle and nutrition that aren’t talked about. And when you make the right changes for you and start seeing small changes in your body, it is so exciting as you can start to gain control of what can feel like a hopeless situation.
How do I know?
Because that was me, I have been there. I tried all the weight loss and PCOS supplements under the sun and I ended up with only short term and expensive fixes. But the underlying condition got worse as my lifestyle offered my body none of the nourishment it needed.
It took me 15 years, but once I found out that eating the right foods for my body, moving my body in the right way and reconnecting with my reproductive organs, all my symptoms disappeared, as did all my chronic health conditions such as asthma and migraines.
I tried all the short term fixes and diets, and discovered the hard way, they just don’t work.

Making small but sustainable changes to your lifestyle can slowly help your hormonal issue at the root cause of the issue, meaning, all the symptoms will reduce too.
I was so surprised to learn when I started cooking and preparing real food, that once I got into the habit, it was cheaper and far quicker than the junk I was eating before as a “convenience”. And I have so many clients, friends, peers and colleagues who can tell you the same.
